Privacy Policy
Last Updated: June 20, 2026
Introduction
Limelight ("we," "our," or "the app") is operated by Jordan Kennedy, a sole proprietor, who is the person responsible for the app and the data controller for the purposes of this policy. Limelight is a movie and TV discovery app built privacy-first. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app handles, what leaves your device, which third parties are involved, and the choices and rights you have. We don't run ads, we don't sell or share your personal information, and we don't track your viewing habits for marketing. By using Limelight, you agree to this policy.
Our Privacy-First Approach
Limelight has no servers of its own that store your personal information. Your library (your Watchlist, Seen list, custom lists, and the titles you hide) lives in your own account with The Movie Database (TMDB), not on a Limelight server. Almost everything the app does happens on your device or as a direct request between your device and the third-party services described below.
Information Stored on Your Device
- When you sign in, your TMDB access token (a sign-in credential) is stored securely in the iOS Keychain so you stay signed in. Signing out removes it.
- A local copy of your lists and your app preferences is kept on your device so the app is fast and works offline. This stays on your device.
- We do not collect names, email addresses, contact information, your location, advertising identifiers, or your search history, and we do not build advertising profiles.
Signing In with TMDB
Limelight uses your own TMDB account to store and sync your library across your devices. Signing in with a free TMDB account is required to use the app.
- When you sign in, you authorize Limelight through TMDB's website, and Limelight receives an access token for your account, stored on your device.
- The lists you create and the titles you add, mark as seen, pin, or hide are saved to your TMDB account so they're available on your other devices.
- This library data is held by TMDB and governed by TMDB's privacy policy, available at themoviedb.org.
SceneSnap and AI Analysis
SceneSnap (a Limelight+ feature) identifies a movie, show, or actor from a photo, screenshot, or video you choose or capture.
- When you use SceneSnap, the image or video you submit is sent to Google's Gemini API for analysis.
- That submission is processed under Google's privacy and data-use policies, available at policies.google.com. We send only the media you choose to analyze, solely to identify what's in it, and we do not store it ourselves.
- SceneSnap runs only when you trigger it; the app does not access your camera or photo library in the background.
Content Information
To show posters, details, ratings, streaming availability, and charts, the app fetches information from third-party content providers, including TMDB and the ratings and streaming-data sources we use. These requests retrieve content and do not include your personal information.
Subscriptions
Limelight+ subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles your payment; Limelight does not receive or store your payment details. Apple's privacy policy governs that transaction.
Our Website
This website uses PostHog for anonymous analytics, configured with cookies disabled and IP-address collection turned off. No personally identifiable information is collected. PostHog's privacy policy governs their practices, available at posthog.com. The Limelight app itself contains no analytics or tracking.
Data We Share with Third Parties
Limelight shares data only with the services needed to make a feature work, never with advertisers or data brokers, and never for marketing. In summary:
- The Movie Database (TMDB): when you're signed in, your library (your watchlist, seen list, custom lists, and hidden titles) is stored in your own TMDB account so it syncs across your devices.
- Google (Gemini): the photo or video you submit to SceneSnap is sent for analysis so the app can identify what's in it. Nothing that identifies you is attached.
- Apple: your Limelight+ purchase is processed by Apple through the App Store; we never see your payment details.
The website (separate from the app) uses PostHog for anonymous, cookieless analytics, as described above.
Why We Process This Information (Legal Bases)
Where data protection laws such as the GDPR apply, we rely on these legal bases: performance of our agreement with you, to provide the features you ask for (signing in, syncing your library, and analyzing a photo or video in SceneSnap when you choose to); and our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, secure, and reliable. We do not process special categories of personal data, and we do not use your data for advertising.
Data Retention
- The information stored on your device (your sign-in token, the local copy of your library, and your preferences) remains until you sign out or delete the app.
- Your library is retained in your own TMDB account until you remove it there or delete your TMDB account.
- We do not retain the photos or videos you submit to SceneSnap; each is sent for analysis and is not stored by us. Google's handling of that media is governed by Google's policies.
- Subscription and payment records are kept by Apple under Apple's policies.
International Data Transfers
The third-party services Limelight relies on (TMDB, Google, and Apple) operate globally, so your information may be processed in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws than your own. Those providers apply their own safeguards for international transfers, described in their respective privacy policies.
Data Security
Your sign-in token is stored in the iOS Keychain, and requests to third-party services are made over encrypted (HTTPS) connections. Because Limelight keeps no central store of your personal data, there is no Limelight database of user information that could be breached. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we do not control, and are not responsible for, the practices of the third-party services described above.
Your Rights and Choices
Because Limelight stores almost nothing about you (only an on-device token), most of your data lives with TMDB, Apple, or Google and is managed most directly with them:
- Signing out removes your TMDB token and the local copy of your library from your device. Deleting the app removes the rest.
- The library data stored in your TMDB account can be viewed, edited, or deleted through TMDB at themoviedb.org.
- You can manage or cancel a Limelight+ subscription anytime in your Apple ID account settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights:
- EEA and UK (GDPR): the rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent. You may also lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
- California (CCPA/CPRA): the rights to know what personal information is collected, to delete it, to correct it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
To exercise a right over anything we control, contact us using the details below. For data held by TMDB, Apple, or Google, please use their respective tools and policies.
Children's Privacy
Limelight is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will address it.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy, and significant changes will be made clear. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
